Sharpen the blade for championship season

For spring sports, the sun is slowly starting to set on the regular season and championship competition is about to begin!

Although traditional 'peaking' methodologies feels outdated, there is a benefit to sharpening up to reach maximal physical, mental, and emotional preparation to deliver championship level performances. Clyde Hart is one of the best coaches to ever train collegiate, professional, and Olympic level sprinters said, "we plan to run fast at the beginning of the season, and faster at the end." No matter the sport, being your best when it matters the most should be the aim.

Here are some things to think about when preparing for championship season:

1 - Have a plan - at no point during training should you be "freestyling", but certainly not during championship prep. This is the time to have everything dialed in and accounted for...you don't want to miss something needed simply because didn't take the time to plan.

2 - Focus on Event/Sport specific work - throw, run, jump, hit, catch, pitch, etc etc...Championship season preparation should prioritize sport-specific training. Set up training sessions to mimic the demands of championship competition. Simulate the efforts that will be needed for the outcomes desired.

3 - Manage load and recovery - Balancing training load with adequate recovery is essential for maximizing performance gains. Pay close attention to the body's signals and adjust training intensity accordingly. Incorporating rest days, active recovery sessions, and recovery modalities such as massage, ice baths, and proper nutrition can help stay fresh.

Some Pro tips:

  • 3 weeks out volume should be reduced and intensity should stay high

  • Adding an extra full rest day does wonders during this time

  • The last real hard session at 10 days out

  • Rest for 2-5 days leading into the final week

  • 5 days out start to relight the fire with quality sessions to avoid being 'flat'

4 - Emphasize mental rehearsal and preparation - Championship season can be mentally demanding when navigating pressure, expectations, and competition nerves. Mental preparation techniques such as visualization, goal setting, and mindfulness can help cultivate a winning mindset. Developing mental resilience and confidence is just as crucial as physical conditioning when it comes to peaking for championship success!

Best of luck to all those getting ready to bring it during their upcoming championship seasons!
